Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Whipped Bakeshop?

We are a custom bakery located in Philadelphia, specializing in custom cakes, cookies and cupcakes. The bakery was founded in 2008 by pastry artist Zoë Lukas, and our retail store opened in October 2009. You may have seen the TV show Ace of Cakes. We'll, we're trying to be aces of everything. It's crazy--we know.

  • How did the bakery get started?

Zoe started posting pictures of her desserts on the picture sharing site Flickr and got a huge response. Before she knew it, orders were coming in and Whipped Bakeshop was born. Soon after that, the bakery was featured in Daily Candy and numerous other publications. It has been a wild ride ever since.

  • Where did you come up with the name Whipped Bakeshop?

Zoë's husband Brennen was talking about the bakery idea with his good buddies John Freeborn and Jason Smith. They were narrowing down names when John said "Whipped Bakery" and Brennen replied with "Whipped Bakeshop." The name just clicked. Also, the URL was available. Finally, it is worth mentioning that Brennen is quite whipped by Zoe's desserts.

  • How did Zoe learn to bake?

Zoë is a fine artist with a degree in painting from the Maryland Institute of Fine Art. She has also been a baking enthusiast for most of her life. In 2003 she accepted an unpaid apprenticeship at Petit 4 bakery in Philadelphia. She was eventually hired and has worked at several other bakeries since then. Her last position was pastry chef at Susanna Foo restaurant. She finds it much more fun to own her own bakery. It's a dream come true.

  • What can I buy at your retail store?

We sell fresh-baked cupcakes as well as tasty La Colombe coffee. We try to change the cupcake flavors often so there is always something new to try. It's also an open kitchen so you can see us baking and decorating, if you're into that sort of thing.

  • Where is the store located?

Whipped Bakeshop is located at 636 Belgrade Street, Philadelphia, PA 19125. It's in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, at the corner of Berks and Belgrade Streets. It's a big neighborhood, so we recommend looking at a Google map before you head over. Free street parking is readily available.

  • What are your hours?

Our walk-in store hours are  Saturday 10-6, but you can order online for pickup or delivery ANY day of the week!

  • What's cool about the store itself?

For one thing, the building is LEED-certified Gold, complete with a green roof. The interior was designed by Bahdeebahdu, and we have a custom light sculpture by Warren Muller. We also think our open kitchen style is fairly unique. In theory, you could see your own cake being decorated. How's that for accountability?

  • How much notice do you need for custom orders?

We ask for a weeks of notice for custom orders. If you need your goodies sooner, please call us at 215-598-5449 and we'll do our best to accommodate your needs.

  • Do you accept corporate orders?

Yes we do! We have done work for Four Seasons Hotels, GlaxoSmithKlein, CBS Radio, Temple University, and many others. We are able to create logo cookies, which are very popular gifts for clients. Gift-wrapping is also available. If you give us enough notice we can create something really amazing. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.
